Using the themes of the UK government’s Social Value Model as a framework, our teams across the country continuously strive to fight climate change using innovative, sustainable assets while tackling economic inequality by engaging with our local communities at every opportunity. Our hiring practices and staff welfare policies have been designed to ensure equal opportunities for all, while providing our staff with the support they need to thrive. We are proud to employ a diverse workforce of at our head offices in Wolverhampton.
When recruiting for our production team we look locally at Walsall College to offer apprenticeships. Beyond diversity and inclusion, our family run company ethos is seen in everything we do for our team members on a daily basis. As a close-knit team, our dedication to wellbeing is reflected in our outstanding staff retention. By supporting our staff to build long-term careers at Morelock we ensure a wealth of knowledge and expertise is retained within the business, allowing us to continuously improve our products and services.
As we engage with our local supply chains, we continuously seek opportunities to support new businesses, new jobs and new skills. Since 2015 we have partnered with Walsall College to support a minimum of 2 apprentices per year in our production team. Currently we have a total of 3 members that have been successfully recruited from our apprentice program. Our partnership with the college also includes providing our staff with opportunities for further development. Recently, we have enrolled 4 members of staff onto courses internally through Walsall College to expand on their skill set. These courses will take up to 2 years to complete with 2 hours per week on the job training. We are concentrating on Improving employability of young people in the local community and have just recently in May 2023 taken on Mia who has started on her journey at Morelock to complete a level 3 in Customer Service. Morelock also works with local schools to provide work experience placements for local secondary school students. We commit to employing a young person (below the age of 23) for 50% of all new positions that become available through an apprentice or graduate program.
As we deliver our products and services, we continuously look to reduce our impact on the environment and use sustainable materials and methods wherever possible. Examples of our recent initiatives to tackle climate change include:
Working closely with our supply chain we have successfully substituted our plastic packaging materials for a recycled cardboard alternative. This change has led to an 85% reduction in our use of plastic saving an estimated 3 tonnes on plastic packing over the last four years alone.
We have invested in the ongoing move to Electric Vehicles (EVs) and currently use 3 electric forklifts in our warehouse to improve efficiency and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 50% when compared to traditional 3 tone diesel equivalents. We have also switched all company cars to EVs and have installed charging points at our Wolverhampton site to actively encourage our staff to make use of the new facility. By making this change we have reduced the CO2 emissions produced by our staff vehicles by an estimated 70%.
Our working processes on contract actively promote efficiency and reduce our teams Carbon Footprint wherever possible. Our delivery and maintenance services use tactical transportation management to minimise any delays and maintain a right first-time approach, eliminating the need for multiple deliveries or repeat visits to site wherever possible.
At Morelock we pride ourselves on maintaining and nurturing a diverse workforce, providing equal opportunities for all. We foster an inclusive environment that values individuals from all backgrounds, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, or disability. By promoting diversity, we enrich our workplace culture and set an exemplary standard for other organizations to follow. With 35.5% of the population from Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities, we actively strive for representation and equity. We have also registered with the government program to offer positions for ex-offenders via the government’s Employability Innovation Fund, further enhancing our commitment to social responsibility.
As part of our continued investment in our local communities, we seek out any opportunities to give back wherever we can. By actively participating in the community our teams will often find unique opportunities for Morelock to use our expertise in signage to support community projects, for example: Working with Clean and Green, we supported a local litter picking scheme to improve the local area, providing signage for scheme (pictured) as well as the time and dedication of members of our staff who volunteers to join the litter picking.
Our staff are often engaged in fundraising activities which we will support however we can. Last year we supported Cash for Kids by fundraising £1025. Cash for Kids are a national charity who support children and young people affected by poverty, abuse, neglect, life-limiting illness, and those who have additional needs. We will continue to support our local communities through our expertise and the dedication of our staff wherever opportunities arise.
